MANADON

"MANATON, or Manadon, is a small village, on an eminence, near the rocky hills and the sources of the West Teign, or Bovey river, on the eastern side of Dartmoor, 3 1/2 miles S.W. of Moreton-Hampstead. Its parish contains 429 souls, and 6,393 acres of land, including the hamlets of Freeland and Water, and more than 2,000 acres of commons and wastes, amid some of the wildest scenery of Dartmoor Forest. Hountor, a stupendous group of rocks, appears like ruined turrets and broken pinnacles, and as seen from different points of view, assumes an endless variety of fantastic figures. . . . The Earl of Devon owns a great part of the parish, and has a rabbit warren of 600 acres here. The rest belongs to the French, Nosworthy, Barham, and Bryant families, and other freeholders; and on the south side of the parish are the Haytor Rock Granite works. The Church (St. Winifred,) is a fine old structure, in the early perpendicular style, with an embattled tower and four bells. It was much injured by lightning on Dec. 13th, 1779. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £13. 12s. 8 1/2d., is in the patronage of the Rev. Wm. Carwithen, D.D., and incumbency of the Rev. W.P. Wood, . . . " [From White's Devonshire Directory (1850)]

A parish in Teignbridge Hundred, and the Archdeaconry of Totnes and Diocese of Exeter.

Subject: Parlbys at Manadon!

Hi Christine,

Congratulations on finding all that info on the Parlbys. And the Parlbys you found go back as far as 1792! Fr. Dick Parle said a while ago that in his copy of the Aston Manor Document the Parlebys/Parlbys were at Manadon, as opposed to Masedon as it appears on our Aston copy here. I wonder if "Masedon" was a typographical error. And I wonder if these Parlbys are somehow related to we Parles, going back centuries.

(My theory is that about all the Parles are related, going back to a common ancestor, back centuries ago. For instance, in 1659 there were only 19 Parles listed in the Bargy region on Co. Wexford, that's the south-central coastal region of the county.)

In the next several days I'm going to type up the response I got from the folks at Aston Hall a couple years ago regarding the Aston Manor Document. I'll send it out to you folks, then post it at the Parle listserv. The document has raised some curiosity recently, so it'll be good for folks to know what the Aston Hall response to the document was, in their words.

I hope it's sunny in Leeds, and happy hunting!

John Patrick
